This building is next door to the E.C.Hayton Plumbing building (now demolished) in Gill Street. Unlike that building it does not appear in NPDC's 1995 CBD Heritage Study although it dates from the same time and together they provided an interesting contrast to Centre City opposite.
A permit was issued to A. Tunbridge on 22 July 1926 for the construction of a building on town section 875, to be built by George Beamish. A.J. Tunbridge was a New Plymouth accountant.
A single page drawing of the original building has been found amongst NPDC building files. The plans are unnamed and undated. They are very simple and were possibly drawn by the builder.
It may not have warranted inclusion into the NPDC study due to it's relatively small scale and simple facade.
The Italian restaurant "Portofino" occupies the ground floor (2023). .
