In 1957 the opportunity arose for the New Plymouth Savings Bank (now TSB Bank) to purchase the building next to their Devon Street West premises. The bank accepted a tender by Roebuck Construction to erect a new building for £36,938. Town planning issues meant the building was not completed until late 1960.

It provided more efficient working conditions for staff as well as a new boardroom. However, as a caption in the New Plymouth Photo News in 1960 states, it provided a "contrast in styles" with the 1930s building next door.

The sporting goods store 'Cook and Lister" leased the ground floor shop for some years.
