At the time this building was erected 'The Kash Menswear' was owned by J. J. Lomas. It was designed in 1925 by well-known New Plymouth architect, Thomas H. Bates. A building permit was issued to Lomas on 31 March 1925 by the Borough Council for (part) Town Section 909, Boon Bros. were the contactors and the expected cost was £3,290.
Taking about six months to finish, the building was completed in December 1925 and was described in some detail by the Taranaki Daily News on 3 December 1925.
Bates also designed Lomas' Upper Brougham Street house in 1924.
