This building on Egmont Street, originally built for the State Fire Insurance Department, was designed by well-known New Plymouth architect, Thomas H. Bates. The contractors were J.T. Julian and Sons Ltd.

It was officially opened by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. J.G. Anderson, on 13 June 1924 - the day after the Palmerston North office.

The architectural and engineering firm Chapman, Oulsnam, Speirs Ltd. occupied the building for some years and in 2016 the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce moved in.
