This residence at 120 Pendarves Street was built for John Connel Nicholson, a New Plymouth lawyer. It was designed by noted New Plymouth architect Thomas H. Bates whose own was nearby at 124 Pendarves Street.
A building permit was issued to J.C. Nicholson by the Borough Council on 4 November 1918 for a residence on Town Sections 1676/1677 (Pendarves Street) and the estimated cost was £1,500.
