This single-storey concrete building on the north side of Gill Street was erected in 1931 for Mr W.J. Dunn. A building permit was issued to Mr Dunn on 6 August 1931 for a steam laundry on Gill Street - the builders were Boon Bros. and the estimated cost £2,647.00. Architect is unknown.
Roch's "Royal Steam Laundry" opened in Gill Street in 1901; in 1915 the name changed to 'New Plymouth Steam Laundry'. In more recent years the New Zealand Towel Service and ALSCO ran their businesses from the premises.
Demolition of the building began in late February 2014 and was complete by 6 March 2014.
