A permit for the construction of a residence for George Clarence Neal on Town Section 92, St Aubyn Street, was granted by the Borough Council on 28 June 1921 - the builder and architect was Charles David Arnold and the estimated construction value was £1200. A copy of the original plans is held by NPDC.
George married his wife Mabel (nee Taylor) during 1900, and it seems the couple had one child, Kenneth Noonan Neal, born in 1904. George and Mabel resided at the home for the rest of their lives, George until his death during September 1953 and Mabel until her death during December 1959.
This is one of the earlier New Plymouth houses to be constructed in the English Domestic Revival/English Cottage Style (constructed around the same time as 109 Pendarves Street). This style would become the dominant design for two-story homes for the next two decades.
A large Pohutukawa tree near the front boundary was removed during 2018.
