This two-storey house in Wallace Place was built in 1923 for New Plymouth draper, Mr James Clewer Morey. The residence was designed by the well-known architectural firm, Messenger, Griffiths & Taylor.
A building permit was issued to Mr Morey for the house on 24 September 1923. It was built by Harold Rowe and the estimated cost was £1,750.
James Morey died on 29 June 1950, aged 80.
