This house is one of a row of three surviving villas constructed by builder George Hartnell about 1911. There were originally four villas, although 14 Kowhai street has since been demolished.
The villa was purchased by settler Thomas Kerr during 1913, and it remained his home until the late 1920s.
Frederick William Mace (grandson of Captain Francis Joseph Mace) and Johanna Bridgitt Mace, moved into the villa at 19 Kowhai street about 1929. Here they raised their five children, Jim, Alf, Fred, Len, and Joe, and it remained their home until their deaths; Johanna in 1958, and Frederick in 1967.
Extensions were made to the property in the 1970s, with the house extensively renovated by Emma and Josh Smaller in 2019.
