Mace Cottage was originally located on lower Carrington Street on Town Section 993 and dates back to the middle of the 1850s when it was built by William and Georgina Johnstone. It was first known as Arundel then later as Mace Cottage.
Subsequent owners have included Thomas Milner, Captain Charles Stapp and Arthur Standish. Captain Francis Mace also bought or leased the property in the 1860s. In 1918 it was purchased by one of his sons, Henry Mace, who sold it to New Plymouth City Council in 1951 for £1800.
It was then leased out and in 1975 was set to be demolished to make way for an electricity substation. However, in an agreement reached between the Taranaki County Council and Technic Properties Ltd, the cottage was moved to Karina Road in Merrilands. It was bought by Enid and Colin Hutchinson in 1989 and is now known as Foxglove Cottage.
This document about the old cottage, researched by Enid Hutchinson, provides a useful background to its history. The February 2001 issue of NZ House and Garden magazine contained a feature on the cottage and the garden created by its new owners.
Foxglove Cottage is listed as a Category A Heritage Building on the NPDC District Plan.
