The Jubilee Boarding House - seen in the centre of the image above - opened in September 1897. It was located on the west side of Currie Street opposite the former Post Office building.

The two-storey wooden building was designed by Mr Brooking, Mr Tong was the builder and Messrs Brown and Co. provided the timber.

On 26 March 1909 the Jubilee was severely damaged by a large fire. The fire broke out shortly after midnight; fortunately all the occupants were rescued safely. The Burgess Fraser building next door escaped unscathed due to its brick construction.

By June 1909 the boarding house had been completely repaired and was reopened for business.

It was demolished in November 1958. (Taranaki Herald 1 November 1958)
