J. E. Nixon's Residence, 40 Hobson Street (1922)

Located on a prominent section on the corner of Hobson and Courtenay Streets, this large home was designed by New Plymouth architecture firm Messenger and Griffiths, for J. E. Nixon in 1922. A permit for the home was granted in April 1922, the builder listed as F. Jackson (note that council plans list the contractor as Boon Bros.), with an estimated construction cost of £1500.

J. E Nixon was an engineer who established his own firm in New Plymouth and was also a talented artist. In 1925 Nixon donated the present East End Reserve entrance gates.
