This large two-storied villa was likely constructed in the 1890s, although the property is thought to have been occupied since the 1850s.
From the 1850s until 1891, this part of Section 12, Fitzroy District, was owned by the Black family; in 1891, the section was sold to James C. George. In July 1895, the property was purchased by Elizabeth Shaw, the wife of New Plymouth land agent Stanley Wakefield Shaw.
The present home is thought to have been constructed for the Shaw's in late 1895 or early 1896, and the style suggests that James Sanderson may have been the architect. The mortgage on the property was transferred to James Sanderson in February 1896 and adds further weight to the argument that Sanderson was the architect.
