This large warehouse on the corner of Breakwater Road and Ngamotu Road was officially opened on 6 December 1958 by the chairman of Foodstuffs (Wellington), Mr F. Cook.

The rapidly expanding Four Square Grocery brand had outgrown their warehouse premises on the corner of St Aubyn and Dawson Streets. This new warehouse provided 14,300 sq. foot of floor space along with an additional 4,000 sq. foot on the mezzanine floor.

A building permit was issued to Foodstuffs by the New Plymouth City Council on 13 June 1958 for the construction of the warehouse at an estimated cost of £26,200. Roebuck Construction Company were the contractors, and they may also have designed the building.

After the opening ceremony in the afternoon there was an official dinner at 6.30 pm, followed by Selwyn Toogood presenting an "In the Bag" show.
