This single storey timber building stands on the corner of Gover and Courtenay Streets on part of Town Section 1464, purchased by Frederick Charles Jury in 1893.
The first reference to a shop on this site is in May 1900 (Taranaki Herald 7 May 1900), when F. C. Jury announced he has opened a general grocery store on the corner of Gover and Courtenay Streets - the current building is thus thought to have been constructed just prior to this date. Jury also took out a further mortgage on the property in November 1899 - likely to fund construction of the shop, and supporting a construction date of early 1900.
It is one of only two early 1900s New Plymouth commercial buildings to retain their original street level facades - the other being 42 King Street. The building is also significant in that it is situated next to a cottage at neighbouring 35 Gover Street (now removed), also thought to have been constructed for Jury around 1896.
The entry for the shop in the NPDC 1995 CBD Heritage Study states its significance lies in it being built to the street boundary unlike the surrounding buildings which are set back from the road.
The 1926 Wises directory lists the occupier as Alfred Joseph Gibbins, a storekeeper. In 1938 the occupier is Ray Jury, a fruiterer and confectioner.
Professional offices for John Crawford in the 1990s and more recently Team Architecture.
