This large two-storied home in the English Cottage Style was constructed for New Plymouth architect Victor Griffiths in 1928. The exterior is in largely original condition, with a stucco/roughcast finish, Marseilles roof tiles, and wooden boxed windows with stained glass leadlights and fanlights.
A permit was granted to H. V. S Griffiths on 25 September 1928 for the construction of a house on Part 5A of W ER, Carrington Road - F. E. Cooper was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £2000.
Records held by NPDC list Messenger, Griffiths and Taylor as the architects, although it is unclear whether Griffiths designed the home himself, or whether all three partners were involved.
This home is situated on an enormous tree-clad section on a prominent ridgeline above New Plymouth City and the Huatoki Valley. It is one of the best examples of a home in the English Cottage Style in New Plymouth and is often admired and photographed.
It's unclear how long Griffiths occupied the home, although he was the occupier when the above c1931-32 photograph was taken. Later owners include the Adkin's.
