This two-storey wooden house at 95 Powderham Street was one of the many boarding houses that operated in New Plymouth during the early part of last century.
The first owners were the stonemason William Moon and his wife Mary. The next owners were Ferdinand and Katherine Wolfe in 1929. They were in turn followed by Mrs Agnes O'Sullivan in 1938. When she sold the business in 1943, the building was purchased by Mrs Nora Jones.
According to the records of Fred Butler (ARC2007-73), Mr Lay (brother of Olympian, Stan), bought the house in 1952 and sometime later it became the office of the Union Construction Company.
In the early 1960s, when the new police station was being built, the building was used as a temporary police station. It was demolished in April 1963 to provide access from Powderham Street to the rear of the police station.
The building is marked on an 1880 map of New Plymouth (ARC2010-220), so it was likely built c1870s. Town section 690, Taranaki Land Deed Index I3 Page 292.
