On 27 February 1924, a permit was granted to Alfred James Chainey by the New Plymouth Borough Council for the construction of a house on Part Section 95, Fitzroy Road - W. Barry was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £1500.
Alfred Chainey lived in the house until his death on 21 May 1953, aged 88 years; his wife Lily had died several years earlier in 1942.
