This attractive villa residence was one of a row of three villas (116, 118 & 120 Hine Street) constructed by timber firm Henry Brown & Co between about 1913 and 1916.

The house initially seems to have been rented, before being purchased by farmer Joseph Brown in 1919 - it remained his home until his death on the 3rd of February 1942.

122 Hine Street is part of a continuous row of five villas that make an important contribution to the streetscape - such a grouping of villas is now uncommon in New Plymouth.
