This double-bay transitional style house was constructed for well-known New Plymouth businessman Walter Ambury in 1914.
Ambury purchased this part of Town Section 1013 from Clarice Allan Douglas sometime around 1913 or early 1914, and a permit was granted by the Borough Council to Ambury on 7 July 1914 for the construction of a residence on Town Section 1013, Liardet Street. The architect and contractor are currently unknown, but the estimated construction cost was £700.
The property was purchased by builder Walter Lewis Thompson in 1924, and he was responsible for constructing the central first floor gable in 1925, with a permit for additions totalling £100 granted to Thompson on 21 December 1925.
Prior to the construction of this home, Clarice Douglas had the house which stood in the centre of Town Section 1013, near the Liardet and Pendarves Street corner, shifted further to the west of the section (present 11 Pendarves Street), allowing for the subdivision of the section, and providing space for Ambury's new house.
