98 Pendarves Street was one of five homes constructed by Thomas and Grace Hirst for each their adult children - Annis Hammerton, Jane Marshall, James Hirst, Mary Devenish, and Harriet Fookes.
This section of Pendarves Street became known as York Terrace, after the Hirst's homeland, and 98 Pendarves Street was known as No. 2 York Terrace - home to Jane Marshall and her family.
Jean Sandel, the well-known New Plymouth surgeon, bought the house in the late 1950s or early 1960s, living there until her death on 4 November 1974. The historic house was sold at auction for $45,000 the following year to an undisclosed buyer.
