This cottage was constructed for Julia Coad sometime during late 1901 or early 1902, and was originally located on Part Town Section 50 (present 75 Hine Street) - it was relocated to 56 Riversdale Drive during the 1990s.
Julia Coad purchased the eastern portion of Town Section 50 from Charles Rielly in July 1899. The section remained vacant for the following couple of years, with both the 1900-01 and 1901-02 New Plymouth Borough Council rating books listing the value of the section as £16, with no house mentioned as being present.
However, by the following 1902-03 rating year, a house is noted as being present on the section; although the value remained at £16, increasing to £18 for the following 1903-04 rating year.
Julia doesn't appear to have occupied the cottage, and it was probably rented for her period of ownership. The cottage was purchased by G. A. Corney in July 1911, and he retained ownership until October 1919, when it was purchased by C. C Lister. In May 1921 there was a conveyance to Te Hiroa Pounamu? & another, and then another conveyance from Ngaronga te Aute? to W. Davy in September 1922. Davy retained ownership until October 1925, when the property was purchased by A. E. Austis, who was still the owner when the property title was issued in 1927.
The cottage remained in Hine Street until the 1990s, when it was relocated to Riversdale Drive by N & J Muir.
