This two-storey home stands on the corner of Barrett and Morley Streets.

A building permit for section number 547 was issued to A.O. Brown on 9 August 1924. Albert Brown was a carpenter and he built the house at an estimated cost of £1,200.

The first owner was probably John Dalrymple – he is listed as the occupier of a house at this location on a 1927 street directory. This is also confirmed by an electoral roll search – his occupation is just “settler”.

Dr James Stuart Church (who had been living and working in Ōpunake) bought the property about 1931. The well-known doctor and anaesthetist was listed as the occupier in a 1932 street directory.

It appears the house remained in the Church family for over 30 years.
