This box cottage was constructed in 1903 for Mr (Arthur) Owen. Notable features of the cottage are its high degree of originality, including brick chimney, verandah and Chicago windows.
A permit for a "Cottage" on Town Section 261, Powderham Street, was granted to Mr (Arthur) Owen by the New Plymouth Borough Council on 16 September 1903. The estimated cost was £330, and the architect/builder is listed as Louis Bullot. At the same time Owen subdivided the section into several parts and in 1910 William and Emeline Webb built a villa on the neighbouring section (subsection 2).
Arthur Owen died at his residence on Powderham Street on 18 February 1914, aged 76. His wife Constance died on 6 June 1932, aged 79, and her obituary in the Taranaki Daily News recalled her courage in saving her young brother from drowning when he had fallen into a deep well.
