This block of shops in Strandon at 487 Devon Street East was built in 1954-55

Hylda Stockman had the area surveyed in 1954 and soon after that the existing residence (owned by Hylda Stockman) was demolished.

Cleland Bros. bought the section and built the block of shops. A permit for three shops was issued on 6 October 1954 at an estimated value of £2,800. Just over one month later, on 19 November, another permit was issued for a fourth shop.

The first businesses to occupy the four separate shops were Modern Way Drycleaners, R.F. Tracey (Dentist), L.D. Cartwright (Chemist), and Wood’s Cake Shop.

Wood's, the cake shop, closed about 1964-65 and in October 1966 the St Vincent de Paul Society opened an opportunity shop at 487d. In about 1996 the society closed this shop and moved further up Devon Street East.
