The two-storey building on the right was demolished on the weekend of 6-7 August 2016.
The date of original construction is unknown. The only building permit that can be found is one issued to "Nops, Martin & Hodge" on 20 July 1939. The permit notes the work was for 'reinstatement after fire' at a cost of £275 and was completed by Boon Bros. Other records suggest that in the 1940s and 1950s the building was owned by Mr George Horsburgh.
In this photo (c1924) of the area published in the Taranaki Daily News as part of their "From the archives" series in 2014, the shop is single storey only.
The last two businesses to occupy the building were the fruit and vegetable shop, 'The Whopping Big Carrot' and the 'Lucky Horse Takeaways'.
The replacement building is a single storey shop; 'Lucky Horse Takeaways' still (2024) occupy one half of the building.
