Frank Messenger called for tenders for "the erection of a residence on Victoria Road for Mrs Henry Gray" in July 1907; a permit for the home was later granted on 5 September 1907. Note that the present 44 Carrington Street was at the time of construction called Victoria Road, with the name later changing to Carrington Street, and the original lower section of Carrington Road taking the name of Victoria Road.

This villa or "cottage" as stated in the permit register, is constructed on the bank above the Huatoki Stream, and is located on Part Town Sections 1060 and 1063.

It appears Mrs Gray may have lived nearby on Carrington Road at this time and also appears to have left New Plymouth soon after (or during) construction of the home, with an auction being held in July 1907 for all of her furniture on account of leaving the district. Her existing home was also advertised for sale or rent soon after this - it is unclear if the new home was sold or retained by Mrs Gray.
