41 Gaine Street was one of two similar cottages constructed on this section for Robert Barnes in 1882.
The western end of Gaine Street was subdivided in early 1881, and Lot S of Town Belt A (this section), was purchased by Robert Barnes in January 1882. However, Barnes was declared bankrupt in mid-1882, and in May of that year, Newton King advertised for sale by auction, as part of the bankrupt estate of Robert Barnes, Section S, with a newly erected dwelling, and also a partially erected dwelling.
One of those dwellings advertised in the bankruptcy auction is now the front portion of 41 Gaine Street, with DP597, surveyed in 1893, confirming the original locations of both cottages. The other cottage was originally located at the front of 39 Gaine Street and was probably removed in the 1930s when the present home was constructed.
Both cottages were purchased by John Field Moverley in May 1882, and he seems to have retained ownership until 1888, when the property was conveyed to the Trustees of Captain Kings Estate. In 1893 the sections were subdivided for C. W. Govett, although little else is currently known about the cottage following the issuing of the property title under The Land Transfer Act.
