353 Devon Street West (1923)

This bungalow was likely constructed for Cyril Hendry Croker in 1923.

A permit for the construction of a home on Section 20, Glen Almond Estate, was granted to C. H. Croker in May 1923 - Croker was listed as the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £1500 - it seems likely that this permit relates to the home currently at 353 Devon Street West.

A copy of the original plan for the home is held by the New Plymouth District Council - although they are undated, and the architect is not listed.

Alterations were made to the home in 1945 - these were designed by well-known New Plymouth architecture firm Messenger, Taylor & Wolfe.

C. H. Croker was a well-known local lawyer and member of the National Party. He was appointed to the Legislative Council in July 1950 as part of the so called "suicide squad", whose role was to vote the Council out of existence.
