This home originally started life in 1919 as a single-storey bungalow, designed by New Plymouth architects Messenger and Griffiths for John Edward Avery. Whilst Avery retained ownership of the property, he doesn't appear to have been the occupier and isn't listed in Street Directories as living in this area - although other members of the Avery family are.

Original plans for the home were found by Rosemary and Brett Gould during renovations and were framed and hung in the home - it is unclear if these still exist.

A permit was granted by the Borough Council to J. Avery on 3 November 1919 for the construction of a house on an unknown section, Avenue Road (now Coronation Avenue) – W. Cliff was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £1200.

A second storey was added to the home by a previous owner of the property, Ian Barry, probably in the 1970s or 1980s. The original ground floor wooden windows have been replaced with aluminium joinery.
