This bungalow was constructed for New Plymouth tailor Horace R. Wright and his family. In late May 1922, noted New Plymouth architects Messenger, Griffiths & Taylor advertised for tenders for “the erection of a residence, in concrete, at Birdwood Avenue, New Plymouth, for Mr H. R. Wright”.
Several months later, on 12 August 1922, a permit was granted to Wright by the New Plymouth Borough Council for the construction of a house on section 63, Wakefield Avenue (the original name for Birdwood Avenue that remained in use for some years after it was changed). Frank Hartnell was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £1350.
