Originally located at 114 Pendarves Street, this two-storey villa can now be found on a lifestyle property in Onaero.
It is thought the first owner of the land was W. K. Hulke who then sold the section to Colonel Messenger in 1862. The original house was likely built shortly after this for Messenger and was probably the first residence erected in this section of Pendarves Street. In 1870 the house was apparently sold to Charles Hursthouse. (Allen archive 2002-14).
Later owners include dentist, Frederick Whitcombe, and the pathologist, Dennis Allen. The house remained in the Allen family for over 50 years.
The original homestead (see image above) was renovated about 1920 and again when the Allen family owned the house.
In 2002 the house was moved from Pendarves Street to a ten-acre site in Onaero. Also located on the property is Ōkato's former St Luke's Church.
