This small cottage is located at 1 Atiawa Street and shares the same title as 5 Queens Road (Part Fitzroy Suburban 126).
The cottage consists of a simple east-west gable with a rear lean-to; the building appears to have been extended to the east at some stage. It is clad in plain roughsawn weatherboard, and has had it's original windows replaced - probably when it was extended. It is of a similar style to 15 Clemow Road, although its roughsawn weatherboard cladding hints at an earlier construction date.
Based on its style and construction, this cottage is estimated to have been constructed sometime between the 1870s and 1880s and is one of two buildings in this block to pre-date the 1925 'Glenavon Subdivision'. Maps show that the area of land bounded by Queens Road, Atiawa Street, Smart Road, and the Railway Line was subdivided later than the rest of Glen Avon.
It has been suggested that the cottage may be related to the original New Plymouth-Waitara Railway constructed in 1875.
It is unclear whether the cottage is in its original location, however it can be seen in 1940s Whites Aviation aerial photographs (with rear chimney); it is possible the cottage was earlier shifted to align with Atiawa Street.
