The Waimate Hotel in Manaia was built in 1903 by Messrs Jno. Ryan and Sons. The architect was Mr. John Willing Warren of Stratford. While several sources put 1906 as the year it was built, this newspaper report in the Hawera & Normanby Star (21 August 1903) makes the earlier date of 1903 much more likely. (Plans in the Puke Ariki collection ARC2003-1021)
The hotel featured in Kelvin Day's "Of passing interest" series in 2014 and is listed in the Manaia Heritage Inventory (2003).
The hotel was completely destroyed in a blaze which is thought to have started about 4.13 am on 29 February 2016.
The hotel was rebuilt and reopened in 2018.
