The stone abutments of the Waipuku Rail Bridge were constructed in 1879 during the laying of the New Plymouth - Marton rail line. Concrete additions were made in 1911.

The contractor was D. Glendinning, who also built the rail bridges on the Mangamawhete, Manganui and Waipuku-iti Streams. (Taranaki Herald  25 Jan 1879)

 The bridge has a N Z Historic Places Trust Category 2 classification.
