This roadside cairn marks the site of the Waihi Redoubt, the main military and Armed Constabulary base of south Taranaki.

Text on Plaque reads:

SITE OF THE WAIHI REDOUBT

1866 - 1886

ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF

LIEUT-COLONEL THOMAS MCDONNELL, N. Z. CROSS

IN 7 YRS OF ACTIVE SERVICE HE WAS FOUR TIMES WOUNDED

DURING HIS TERM OF SERVICE, OUT OF 136 ENGAGEMENTS IN

NEW ZEALAND HE WAS UNDER FIRE IN FORTY  OF THEM.

HE WAS DEFEATED ONLY ONCE BY

TITOKOWARU, FIGHTING  CHIEF OF NGATI RUAHINE, TARANAKI

TO WHOSE MEMORY THIS CAIRN IS ALSO ERECTED.
