This commemorative brass bell is currently displayed on the first floor of the New Plymouth District Council civic centre building on Liardet Street, outside the office of the Mayor.

The MV Smit-Lloyd 10 was the support vessel for the Discoverer II oil rig which discovered the Maui gas field in March 1969. Built in the Netherlands in 1966, the 59-metre tug could carry 784 tonnes.
