Water vats like this rare remaining one, were used for replenishing water in steam locomotives. The vats were to be found in a number of railyards in the country but they became redundant on the introduction of diesel locos on the lines in the 1960s.

This tank, at the former Whangamomona railyard, is one of the few remaining in situ on a rail line - albeit the line is now mothballed.
