This was one of two built in Waitara in 1942 as part of Taranaki's coastal defences against possible Japansese invasion. The second is now on West Beach after being eroded from the coast.
Central machine gun post with 'wings' for 3 or more riflemen on each side.
In 2015 the area around the machinegun post was developed during the Taranaki Regional Council's up-grade of the Waitara flood-protection scheme.
