This was one of two posts built in Waitara in 1942. After being eroded from the foreshore covering the mouth of the Waitara River, this "arrow-head" machinegun post is now in the intertidal zone. The post was designed for a central machinegun with up to 3 riflemen in each wing. Another similar post  is in the West Quay Park near the Waitara CBD. Both were manned by Waitara Home Guard units during World War II.

'Arrow-head' type - see Cooke, Defending New Zealand (2000) Vol 2, p 768-9. (TRC355.0335 COO)
