The Kahouri Stream Bridge, situated on East Road (SH 43), Stratford, was built in 1908 after the Stratford County Council County Engineer E.C. Robinson recommended a new bridge as the old structure was unsafe. On 29 November 1907 the Taranaki Herald reported Mr H McKay's tender for the renewal of the bridge had been accepted.

"Before the Patea River was bridged (on Skinner Road) the settlers at the East Road end of Skinner Road and surroundings had their own community. Kahouri Bridge had a (Methodist) church, tennis club and branch of the W.D.F.F. but these faded away or merged with Skinner Road organisations". from: Church, Ian, The Stratford Inheritance, 1990.
