The Hāwera Star building on the corner of Regent Street and Little Regent Street was built in 1912-13. It has been associated with the newspaper industry for over 100 years. The building features in the Hāwera Town Centre Heritage Inventory (2003).
In April 1912 advertisements appeared in the Hawera & Normanby Star calling for tenders "for the erection of offices in reinforced concrete in Regent Street for Hawera Star". The tenders were to be lodged with the well-known Hāwera architect, J.A.Duffill, so it is likely he designed the building. The newspaper reported on 18 January 1913 that machinery and plant were being moved into the new premises.
In October 2016 it was announced that Fairfax's (now Stuff) South Taranaki team (Hāwera Star and Taranaki Daily News) would move to new premises.
In 2022 the South Taranaki team of Excel Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Ltd. moved into the building after a five-year restoration and strengthening project overseen by Boon Architects. While the outside has retained much of its distinctive period features, the interior has been considerably altered while also trying to incorporate some heritage elements like the old roof trusses.
