A branch of the Bank of New Zealand in Hāwera first opened in 1877. This building, designed by noted New Plymouth architect T.H. Bates and described in some detail by the Hawera & Normanby Star on 26 January 1924, opened for business in September, 1925. It was built by E. A. Pacey, Hāwera. As was usual in banks of the time, the manager and his family lived upstairs.
